Following a successful 2018-19 season in the NBL Division 3, the University of Chester Men’s basketball team has been promoted NBL Division 2, just one tier below professional level. The team also added some silverware to their trophy cabinet as they conquered the National Shield and won NBL Division 3 North during a fabulous campaign.
The NBL decided to tweak the format of the competition and split the Division into north-south leagues meaning, more Division 3 teams earned promotion to Division 2 than usual. Nevertheless, the University of Chester is now one of the highest-ranked university-ran teams in the NBL. They are full of confidence after their most recent campaign and are determined to do well in Division 2 North in order to secure back to back promotions.
The teams that will join Chester in the newly formed Division 2 North and compete for a place in Division 1 are: Charnwood College Riders, Derbyshire Arrows, Derbyshire Spartans, Manchester Magic (demoted from Division 1), Myerscough College, Sheffield Hallam University, Team Birmingham Elite, Bristol Hurricanes, Bristol Academy Flyers and Team Newcastle (demoted from Division 1).
Promotion is based on league ranking but also off-court standards including facilities, club structure, and financing. The University of Chester team is looking for sponsorship opportunities in order to improve its programme both on and off the court to provide its student-athletes with a top-class experience. Businesses are encouraged to get in contact with Niel Gillard 1111045@chester.ac.uk if they want to increase their reach potential whilst also stimulating growth for the University basketball programme.
