The University of Chester Basketball Team can confirm that Phil Kelly-Brandreth has signed a professional contract to play in the British Basketball League for the Manchester Giants.
The shooting guard departs Chester after a successful period with the university in which he helped the team reach National Basketball League Division 2. He also guided Chester to a National Shield triumph and was named the MVP of the game.
Upon his departure, Kelly-Brandreth highlighted how the people involved in the programme helped him earn a professional contract
‘It is a great set up with very passionate people involved. Everyone is very welcoming; they only want the best out of the players both on and off the court. Niel, Chris and Andy put so many free hours into the program, developing it and making it appeal to players from all over the country and world.’
Kelly-Brandreth added that “Helping the team go from the Founders Cup to winning Division 4, the National Shield and then Division 3’ were his proudest moments during his stay at the university.”
The departing shooting guard finished with a goodbye message for the fans in which he left the door open for a return sometime in the future and expressed his confidence in the Chester team going into Division 2 next season.
“I wouldn’t say the door is forever closed. I will be down to support the team as much as my schedule and commitments allow me to. I know they can make an impact in the next division and will be able to hold their own.”
We would like to thank Phil for his contribution to the team during his time here. We also want to congratulate him on his move to the Giants and wish him the best of luck in his new adventure in the BBL.
